Want to be at the head of East Grand Forks’ city government?

Citywide elections are Nov. 3, and the window to become a candidate for one of five elected positions at East Grand Forks City Hall opened Tuesday, July 28. It closes at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 11.

The five spots up for grabs are the city’s mayor and City Council seats representing Ward 1, Ward 3, Ward 5, plus an at-large seat that represents the city as a whole. Each is a four-year term.

To file as a candidate for any of those seats:

  • Call East Grand Forks City Hall staff at (218) 773-2483 to be let into the building, which city leaders closed to the public to ward off the coronavirus pandemic.

  • Fill out an affidavit of candidacy at the city’s administration office.

  • Pay a $2 filing fee.

The four council seats are held by Clarence Vetter, who served on the council from 2004-2007 and was elected to four-year terms in 2012 and again in 2016; Tim Riopelle, who was first elected in 2016; Council President Mark Olstad, who was voted to the council in 2012 and again in 2016; and Chad Grassel, who was elected in 2012 and 2016.

Grassel, the son of longtime council member Dick Grassel, said in December that he did not plan to run for a third term .

Mayor Steve Gander served on the council from 2002-2007, then was voted to his first term as mayor in 2016.

No one had filed for any of the five positions as of 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, according to city staff.
