DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) - One Minnesota politician is not throwing his hat in the ring for U.S. Senate.

In an exclusive interview on Wednesday with Northern News Now, Rep. Pete Stauber says he will not run for Minnesota’s open U.S. Senate seat.

Some wondered if the Republican, who currently represents northern Minnesota in the U.S. House, would be interested in vying for Sen. Tina Smith’s seat.

Smith announced on Feb. 13 that she wouldn’t be running again next year.

Stauber says he feels he can make more of a difference in his current role.

“I’m the chair of energy, resources, and minerals right now,” Stauber said. “Every single thing that the Trump administration wants to move forward has to come through the committee that I chair.”

As of now, Minnesota’s Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan is the lone contender for the open position. She announced her run shortly after Smith’s announcement.
