Dear [Lawmaker],

I’m your constituent and I’m asking that you support the legalization of sports betting. Sports betting is already here, and legalizing it is the safest way to go. The reality is that hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans are already sports betting, just on offshore platforms that are much more dangerous than regulated, legal sportsbooks. These sites don’t have to offer consumer protections, don’t set limits or promote responsible gaming, and it’s easy for minors to access them. Frankly, the illegal sites don’t care about the end user. But legalizing sports betting would allow us to regulate the industry, bring it out in the light, and protect folks. The National Council on Problem Gambling found that legal sports betting apps have STRONGER consumer protections than other virtual industries, like stock-trading platforms. Plus banning sports betting just drives folks to offshore platforms that thrive due to no age checks and no spending limits. A sports betting ban is short-sighted and it won’t help the people who need it most. ACTUALLY protect Minnesotans by legalizing and regulating the industry.
